On the occasion of the International Thalassemia Day, the President of the Republic, H.E.Mr. Ilir Meta was present at the blood donation session organized by the Faculty of Economics in the State University of Tirana in the framework of the initiative taken by the “Blood Donation Alliance”.
During this blood donation awareness raising session, held in the “Freedom” building in the the City of Student, President Meta noted that “This donation takes on a great symbolism, because it occurs on May 8th, which is the International Thalassemia Day and Blood which you donate today, will go to the aid of talasemic children and youth who are in need of it.”
After repeating and re-emphasizing his public appeal for the awareness of citizens and institutions to donate blood and save human lives as a sign of humanity and solidarity, the Head of State thanked professors and students of the Faculty of Economics, especially the young who are so devoted to such a vital cause of extraordinary human significance as is the blood donation, precisely on the International Thalassemia Day.
“I am very pleased to be returning to the Student City, on the occasion of the 1st anniversary of the Blood Donation Alliance and the 20th anniversary of the Albanian Thalassemia Association.
It is important to engage as a society and encourage young people and young women to become involved in the cause of blood donation.
We will continue to work in this direction and we will seek the contribution and commitment of everyone. Naturally, we also give priority to regular donors to permanently resolve this issue once and for all through voluntary donation, as all other developed countries have done, “noted the President of the Republic.
“I believe that during this year we have done many donation sessions all over the country. We will continue further. It is important to engage as many young people because the quality of blood is very important.
Fundamental to this process is the prevention of thalassemia, which can and should be minimized through an effective awareness campaign, “said President Meta.
